I don’t particularly like spending huge amounts on travel itself. I always get the cheapest flights possible. As long as I’ve got somewhere to sleep, that’s good enough for me. Don’t take more than you need to. I travel with carry on baggage only. This means I pay only the headline price for a flight. I don’t pay for checked baggage. Similarly, I don’t see the point in paying for speedy boarding or priority boarding – you’ll still catch the same flight, you’re just paying to sit on the plane for a little bit longer. It doesn’t get you there any sooner. 

For the most part, there’s no point in hiring a car. If you’re in a capital city, then public transport is typically far better, especially for getting around many of the tourist sites. On top of that, driving in different countries can be a little stressful. Driving in Italy is an interesting experience!
